Why Diversity and Equity Matter at HU
Attendance: All Faculty and Staff
Presenter[s]: Rebecca Maldonado Moore, PhD, Eric Romero, PhD, and Adrian Sandoval, MA
Description: A protracted history of access, achievement and disparities among students of color dating back to colonial America. The political climate and civil unrest of the 1960s served as the backdrop for higher education systems to acknowledge those disparities. Over the last sixty years, state and federal governments have responded through legislation and appropriations to support access and opportunities in higher education for diverse, marginalized, oppressed and first-generation learners. Today, there are Historically Black Colleges & Universities, Tribally Controlled Community Colleges & Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions within public educational systems. In theory, each of these systems provides a supportive structure for students to accomplish academic goals, to belong to their respective community, to become engaged local or global citizens and eventually to secure a rewarding career. This presentation focuses on higher education’s progress and challenges in equitably advancing the public purposes of higher education within our diverse, complex world. Diversity spans the spectrum of human differences. Dimensions of individual and group difference can include age, culture and ethnicity, disability, gender identity, intellectual perspective, nationality, race, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and veteran status. Specifically, this presentation provides an overview of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education including achievement gaps for some populations. The panelists offer examples of evidence-based practices to demonstrate the value and merit of equity and inclusion policies and practices that benefit all students. Finally, the panelists provide information on the President’s Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from 2015 to present.
