Strategic Planning

HU Vision 2025 is the all-encompassing 5-year Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Regents (Oct. 2020) after being vetted by every stakeholder group at NMHU. To support HU Vision 2025, Unit Strategic Planning focuses more on how your department or office (the Unit) works within the larger strategic plan for the university. This workshop will provide a short description of HU Vision 2025 and provide both the reasoning and the tools you will need to accomplish your annual planning at the Unit level.

Strategic Planning for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

NMHU Strategic Plan 2025 will require all NMHU academic units and offices to develop a five-year strategic plan. Five strategic goals have been identified for discussion and development. Goal # 4 states “Advance excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion policies and practices”. Five planning objectives are identified within this particular goal. This workshop will provide facilitation space for units to begin a discussion of Goal # 4 and the developed objectives of that particular goal. Work shop
facilitators will provide definitions and resources for participants to utilize in their planning discussions.

Learning Community (LC) Instructor Meeting

This session, for Learning Community faculty, will allow LC faculty teams to finalize the integration of
their LCs with the support of other LC faculty, the CTE Program Coordinator, and the FYE Director.
Faculty will also meet the Peer Mentors assigned to their LCs and begin planning with them.

Integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into Higher Education Instruction

The pandemic brought a heightened awareness to the trauma students, families, and teachers are facing. This awareness has resulted in an urgency to ensure teachers are prepared to provide explicit SEL instruction in their classrooms. This session will introduce you to the New Mexico Public Education Department recently adopted Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework and guidance documents and present strategies on how to incorporate SEL into the classroom. The purpose of this session is to come together to facilitate conversation and best practices to continue to immerse SEL in our courses.

Sexual Harassment Awareness Training

In this program, you will learn the definition of discriminatory harassment, learn what type of conduct constitutes sexual harassment, learn how to make a report, and practice applying these rules to a hypothetical situation.

Creating Inclusive and Effective Classroom Discussions

Presenter[s]: Jacob Avery, PhD, Assistant Professor in Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice
This session will consider how to create inclusive and effective classroom discussions. Featuring examples of my own instruction, as well as other faculty, this session offers instructors a roadmap for elevating and enhancing our classroom discussions. In particular, we will carefully consider how to match teaching strategies with specific classroom discussion scenarios. The themes of “inclusivity” and “effectiveness” will figure prominently in this session. Furthermore, we discuss how different teaching and learning modalities — both face-to-face and online — provide unique opportunities for classroom discussions. Faculty members from all disciplines are encouraged to attend and participate.

Battling Imposter Syndrome

Many students arrive at NMHU with a tremendous amount of self-doubt. Whether they be 1st generation college students, come from financially insecure families or school districts, or are underrepresented minorities in their desired field of study, they have a lot of reasons to accept the negative self-dialogue that they may just not be “college material”.

Teaching STEM online: New Opportunities and Remaining Challenges

Teaching online was new to most STEM faculty in the spring of 2020, but most of us now have over a year of experience. Many explored new ways to assess student learning, bring in outside speakers, and engage students in open inquiry, active learning, and group work. Specific challenges include teaching labs in a virtual format. This open forum will be a facilitated discussion where participants will share what worked well and should be incorporated in future courses, what technological tools were
effective, what remaining barriers exist, and what just doesn’t work in this environment. Participants are expected to leave with ideas for future online and face to face teaching.
